My beloved mother, Lorraine Porcelli, succumbed to her battle with cancer in June of 2024. She spent over three decades serving as a wound care specialist. Finally, retiring just a few years ago she had hoped to live out the remainder of her life surrounded by family and taking on new adventures. Unfortunately, this new freedom was short lived after she received her life altering diagnosis. A story all too familiar to millions of Americans and cancer patients worldwide. What neither my mother nor our family was prepared for was the fight not only against cancer, but the second most agonizing part of treatment, her own skin.
Already fragile from the illness, her skin couldn't withstand the constant removal of traditional dressings and bandages. Each time the tape was peeled away, it left her skin raw and inflamed, making her even more uncomfortable. Even with the gentlest approach the pain inflicted from this constant, but important act left her with a feeling of dread and defeat. The toll it took on her was evident to everyone. Eventually, the pain became so unbearable that Lorraine refused the dressings altogether, leaving her vulnerable to infections.
“Why does it have to be like this, isn’t there a better way?” A phrase I found myself reciting repeatedly. I was explained that this is the only way, this is how bandages are done and how they have always been used.
I refused to accept this answer and set out on my own journey for a solution.
This is personal, this is a story of refusal to accept that just because something was done one way for so long, it does not make it the only way.
My Wife and I began to partner with our close friends in the medical field in search of answers. This partnership led to the creation of SilSecure— a silicone dressing designed to be gentle yet secure, ensuring that no one else would have to endure the same pain she did. While it may be too late for Lorraine, we refuse to accept that it is too late for the millions of those currently suffering today. My mother’s misery was not in vain, and through her suffering she helped inspire a revolution in the medical industry.
